Manitoba winters are beautiful

As I head off for a week of warm Miami Beach weather, I’m taking a moment to appreciate our beautiful Manitoba winters. Yes, it’s ridiculously cold sometimes, but as we’ve seen this year, it can also be wonderfully warm (for winter). The varying temperatures and wind work to shape the snow… to bring us stunning hoarfrost and to wow us with layers of ice. Early morning or evening walks can be magical when big fluffy flakes are falling, and the air can be so very crisp and fresh. Yes, winter can be a trying season, but it also brings a quiet, chilly beauty that no other season can.

A winter visit home

My sister and I went home to visit our family this weekend. I say the same thing every time, but it was so lovely to be out in the country and to have time to visit and relax. Elaine and I were feeling very thankful for each other… both so happy that we have a mutual love for photography and for wandering off the beaten path. The highlights of the weekend were the northern lights and star photography, trudging through the snow in the Cypress River valley and eating soup, sandwiches and pie in the community hall.

A walk on the Forks river trail

KN-RiverTrail-3147
My sister Elaine and I went for a lovely long walk down The Forks river trail. Next time I plan to go back with skates, but for this time, it was nice to walk. We didn’t make it down the Assiniboine River leg, but we did do most of the Red River leg, stopping along the way to check out the warming huts. It was so sunny and beautiful out today — a little windy at times, but nothing we couldn’t deal with. I’m so thankful to have this yearly skating and walking path created in our city.

Urban suburban… my 7+ mile adventure

BlogPostPhotos-EpicWalk1

This morning I woke up with the urge to spend hours enjoying the outdoors. Although it’s technically spring in Winnipeg, the weather has been alternating between parka cold and spring puddles, sometimes in the space of an afternoon. Today though, it looked to be a relatively nice day. So I decided to go for a walk… a really long walk, maybe even an epic walk (at least for me). For the Winnipeger’s reading this, I decided to walk from The Forks to Charleswood.

My kind of river trail

By | Blog, Photography | 2 Comments

On Saturday, while my nephew Ian was playing in a hockey game, my sister Elaine & I went out with Erin and Dion to skate on the river. What’s interesting, is I’m fairly certain this is the first time I’ve skated on this river. It amazes me really, because I grew up skating all the time (at the rink at school and at the dugout in our pasture)… and I’ve certainly spent many a summer hour wading through the river. My brother and I even paddled a canoe downstream one summer when the water was high enough that it covered the barbed wire fences. But skate on it? Never.

Farm Project: December

Blog: Farm Project, Dec-1

I don’t have a lot of farm-related photos from December because my sister and I didn’t head out until our annual family gathering for Christmas. Mom did send me a couple of photos to show the progress on the scale shed that Warren has been building on his yard. When it is done, it will be large enough to park both the semi and grain trailer inside it. On days when it isn’t too cold or windy to safely work, Warren and Dad have been framing in the walls and rafters.
