On December 5, GDC Manitoba’s 16th installment of PechaKucha Winnipeg took place at the Park Theatre. As always, it was an eclectic, inspiring mix of awesomesauce. My personal favourite was Tannis Zimmer, who rocked us with her rhyming story presentation about the heart and the mind.

This past weekend, I got to attend the National AGM for the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) as an observer from the Manitoba Chapter. This is my second time attending and once again, it proved to be an incredibly rewarding, albeit tiring, few days.

We at GDC Manitoba have had 12, count them, TWELVE! PechaKucha Nights in Winnipeg now. Three years later, we’re still going strong and have already booked our dates for 2013 (March 7, May 16, September 12 and December 5). What’s so amazing to us is that we keep finding such interesting speakers… it’s a real testament to the varied creative culture that we have in Winnipeg! We always do our best to choose an eclectic, entertaining mix of presenters for each line-up, but that is where our work stops. Our speakers pour their heart and soul into their presentations — they make us laugh, cry, think and most of all, they give us a huge, heaping dose of inspiration. We can’t thank them enough.

On Saturday, October 20, GDC Manitoba presented Pencils Down: A BlueSky Workshop. Led by Mark Baskinger, associate professor in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh), and William Bardel, principal of Luminant Design (New York City), the workshop offered clear and concise ways to learn how hand-sketching techniques – with pencils and pens – are an effective means of recording, presenting and sharing ideas. A primer on sketching, it helped the attendees to become more confident and better visual communicators, while demonstrating simple ways of using drawing to enhance the process of collaborative design.
