365two-Week31

This week is all about music. Mostly I listen to it on my drive to and from work, but if I’m at my desk long enough I also listen to it there… and sometimes before bed, and even more occasionally, sometimes when I’m cooking. I’m pretty attached to CBC Radio One (talk radio), so I often have that on instead. I’m not much of a shopper, so I’ve discovered wandering around the grocery store or the mall with a good playlist cheers me up immensely. The one place that I rarely listen to music is when I’m outside. I prefer to simply hear the sounds around me… the birds, the traffic, people talking, etc.

In any case, here are seven songs that seemed to jive with my mood each day. Enjoy!

Winnipeg Folk Festival 2012

My impressions of this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival (my eighth year in a row)…
After this many years, folk fest feels like home. I feel 100% comfortable and safe, surrounded by good folkie souls. Sunday always comes with mixed emotions — on the one hand, I’m missing my husband and dog and kind of want to go home, and on the other hand, I wish it could go on for a few more days. It’s all part of the cycle though and now we get to look forward to next year! This wasn’t my favourite year for music, but I still had a wonderful time and based on my list below, have lots of artists to check out and enjoy further.

Live Music

Although I love music, and am a firm believer that grocery shopping, errands and driving are so much more enjoyable with good tunes in the background, I’m more likely to sit or walk in silence… just listening to the noise (or quiet) around me. I think I most enjoy live music… especially in smaller, more intimate venues (like the CYRK) or somewhere with space to move or dance (like Folk Fest or the Pyramid). Arena and stadium shows are good too… but I do hate having to stay in one place all night.

Alphabet playlist

By | Blog, Music | No Comments

While traveling last week, I decided to pass the time by making an Alphabet playlist. This essentially consisted of picking my favorite song for each letter of the alphabet (out of what I already had on my iPod). For some letters I had lots of choices, for others, barely any. Some songs were chosen out of pure nostalgia, others because they are more recent discoveries. Anyways, I thought I’d share it because I think it reflects my eclectic taste in music pretty well. :)

There is no movement without rhythm

By | Blog, Culture, Music | No Comments

Last night I took part in a drum workshop with Jordan Hanson of Hand Drum Rhythms (accompanied by Sam Lopez on bass drums). I haven’t been to a drum class in a couple of years now and I realized last night how much I miss drumming regularly. There is just such a sense of positive, fun energy that results out of playing these rhythms with a group.

Jordan told us about this video and I wanted to share it — it was created by brothers Thomas Roebers and Floris Leeuwenberg and was filmed over the course of one month in Baro, Guinea, Africa. This is how they explain it:
