I didn’t make it out to the farm in August, but I’ll be heading out for the September long weekend! In any case, my sister Elaine drove out last week to catch some of the canola harvest in action. These are her photos and notes.
My brother and Dad were harvesting an edible canola at ‘Grandpa’s Farm’ (which is our name for the farm where my Mom grew up). The yield was lighter this year, due to the heat wave and less moisture. Canola has much higher yields when the weather is cool. It takes four full hoppers to fill the semi trailer, which equated to about six rows in the field. There are a few more fields of canola left to harvest this year.
